Marina Sirtis

I read that Marina Sirtis (who plays Counsellor Troi in ‘Star Trek Next Generation’) would be signing autographs at a film convention in Coventry, March 2008.

I worked for over 30 hours creating a portrait of her character, and also Patrick Stewart’s character, together.

On the day of the convention I left home at 4am and drove 160 miles with my dad up to Coventry. After queuing for 3 hours we met Marina. She was so kind and friendly and was genuinely impressed with the painting. She called over to fellow actor Brent Spiner (who plays 'Data' in Star Trek) sitting nearby, to show him the painting.

Marina was wonderful and took time to chat to me for a few moments too.

We tried to film the meeting but the video function on my camera didn't work at first, but luckily we got the tail end of our wonderful meeting on video, when Marina posed for a moment with the painting.

Patrick Stewart

A few months later in July, Patrick Stewart was signing autographs at a film convention in London.

I left home at 5.30am and travelled 100 miles to London to meet him. Arriving at 8am, there was already a huge queue of fans waiting to get his autograph.

He arrived at 12pm and we were told he would only be there for 3 hours.

I had to pay £25 for his autograph and was told by the staff that he does not allow photos to be taken of himself.

I was worried that after all the effort I put into painting the portrait and meeting Marina, I wanted to have proof that he had signed it too, so I hung my camera around my chest and switched it to video mode and left it running without touching it, hoping I could capture some footage without offending him.

He signed the painting and said "Its very nice, congratulations".

I was not allowed to shake his hand and I was asked to leave as soon as he had signed it.

Fortunately, when I checked the film footage later, I had managed to capture the moment he signed it.

Below is the film of Marina Sirtis with the painting.
